UNATTENDED (DIRECT) CREMATION

direct cremation, also known as an unattended cremation, is a simple and straightforward cremation that takes place without a traditional funeral service, minister, or mourners present.

The cremation typically occurs in the morning at a local crematorium chosen by the funeral director or family. In some cases, family members may be allowed to witness the coffin entering the chapel, and a piece of music can be played if the crematorium permits.

After the cremation, the ashes (cremated remains) are usually returned to the family in a biodegradable container or urn.

Although there is no formal funeral service at the time of cremation, families often choose to commemorate their loved one’s life in other meaningful ways, such as holding a memorial service, scattering the ashes in a special place, or gathering for a celebration of life at a later date.

ATTENDED CREMATION

At Shire Funeral Services, we will be by your side throughout, ensuring everything is arranged with care, dignity and attention, so you can focus on remembering your loved one.

An attended cremation allows family and friends to come together to say a personal and meaningful goodbye. The service can be held at a crematorium, where you have time to reflect, share memories and honour your loved one in a way that feels right for you.

Whether you prefer something simple and quiet or a more traditional service with readings and music, we will gently guide and support you in creating a farewell that is both respectful and personal.

BURIAL

A burial service with Shire Funeral Services provides a respectful and dignified way to lay your loved one to rest. We support you in arranging a service that reflects your wishes, whether religious or non-religious, and guide you through every step of the process.

Our team manages all practical arrangements, including coordination with cemeteries, scheduling the service, and working with celebrants or clergy. Services may include a ceremony at a place of worship or chapel, followed by a graveside committal.

CHAPEL OF REST

Many families find great comfort in having the opportunity to see their loved one before the cremation takes place. A private viewing can offer several emotional and psychological benefits, including:

  • A Chance for Closure: Seeing your loved one can help make the loss feel more real and assist in beginning the healing process.
  • An Opportunity to Say Goodbye: Spending a quiet moment together allows families and friends to say their personal farewells in a peaceful setting.
  • Emotional Support for Family Members: Viewing can bring family and friends together, providing shared comfort and connection at a difficult time.
  • Honouring the Life of a Loved One: A viewing can serve as a meaningful moment to reflect on cherished memories and the impact your loved one had on your life.

FLORAL TRIBUTES

At Shire Funeral Services, we do not handle floral tributes in house however we work alongside local florists and can order tributes on your behalf, making the process easier for you.

VIEWING AT HOME

Where possible, some families choose to have their loved one rest at home for a short time before the cremation. This can offer a familiar, peaceful setting that allows relatives and friends to say goodbye in their own way and at their own pace. Spending time with a loved one at home can bring comfort, help the reality of their passing gently settle in, and provide space for quiet reflection, shared memories, and support from one another. It’s a deeply personal choice, and we’re here to offer guidance and care to make it as meaningful and comforting as possible.

This usually takes place the day before the cremation and can last from an hour to overnight, depending on what feels right for you.
